What Are Throwing Knives?
When a new knife thrower envisions the throwing knives, they might imagine something from your kitchen knife block. Rest assured, we won’t have you throwing steak knives! The knives we use are specially designed for throwing, so you can enjoy the experience without worrying about the safety of your group.
Axe vs. Knife Throwing: What’s the Difference?
While both axe and knife throwing offer a thrilling experience, they each bring unique challenges and rewards. From the obvious size difference and feel of the tools to the technique required, there are subtle yet important distinctions that set them apart.
Throwing Distance
A primary difference between throwing knives and axes is the distance from the target. This difference comes down to physics. Throwing lounges like Dueling Axes have already crunched the numbers, positioning you at an optimal distance for nailing that bullseye.
The main reason for the difference in throwing distance lies in the size and weight of the tools. Knives can complete more rotations than axes when thrown from the same distance.
For knife throwing, you’ll want to stand about 10 to 12 feet away from the target, while axe throwing is best done from 12 to 15 feet away.
If you keep missing the target, try adjusting your distance by a few inches forward or backward. This tweak gives your knife more or less time to rotate, increasing the chance of hitting the target. It may take some trial and error, which is why you get three knives per turn to practice with.
Force
Throwing knives requires a smaller amount of focus to stick the target. Their streamlined shape and lighter weight allow for the knife to pierce the target significantly easier than axes. Throwing axes are bulkier and therefore require more power behind each throw to ensure they hit the target and stay there.
Grip
The grip and form for knife and axe throwing are similar, with one key difference: the number of hands used. For axe throwing, both hands are often needed, but for knife throwing, just one. Knife throwing feels more like throwing darts than axes, though the general motion remains quite similar.
